Unusual logistics made a challenging job of lifting two halves of a vacuum boiler. Rolf Riedl Gmbh, a Hagen, Germany, international project forwarder was the main contractor to move the boilers from the manufacturer at the Dutch north seaport of Vlissingen, along the Rhine River to the Port of Strasbourg, through the French Alps to the destination in Switzerland. Rolf Riedl took two weeks to move the load by barge and heavy load trailers. The two boilers each measured 35.7 feet by 18 feet by 16.7 feet (10,700 mm by 5,500 mm by 5,000 mm). After seven days on the Rhine River, the boilers were lifted by mobile crane to a low loader from French heavy hauler Transport Millon. The convoy started the 248-mile (400 kilometers) trek via Colmar, Dole, Lons Le Saunie and Les Rousses across the French Western Alps and into Switzerland. Maintaining a precise time schedule and pace to coordinate rail crossings and handle mountain roads with 11-degree grades and 90-degree turns, the crew's competency was challenged. Another challenge on the route was a new skiing flyover, constructed for skiers and tourists near the French ski resort Les Rousses. Moving the boilers under the flyover was impossible – they were too large to fit underneath. Project forwarder Rolf Riedl made arrangements for a heavy-duty crane to meet the convoy at the flyover to unload the boiler halves. The timing worked well, and the empty vehicles passed under the flyover while the crane lifted the boilers over, loading them again on the other side. The convoy reached its destination the next day after 14 days en route. | Rolf Riedl arranged for a mobile crane to lift boilers over a flyover in France.
